Match Report
YOUNG STARS OVERPOWER MATCH FIT ACADEMY
Romario Sterling scored a brace while Lansana Doumbouya had a goal and an assist as the Junior Lone Star U19s (Young Stars) bounce back from their opening day loss to defeat Match Fit Academy 3-1 on Match Day 2 of the Atlantic Premier League (APL), played at the YSC Stadium in Wayne, PA.
After losing their season opener two weeks ago away to league leaders FC Montco, the Young Stars knew that they had to bounce back in style in this match and they started attacking Match Fit Academy at the very first whistle.
Romario Sterling put the Young Stars ahead in the 15th minute before Match Fit Academy equalized in the 25th minute. Just before half-time, Lansana Doumbouya received the ball near the half-way line and he was allowed enough space to run through Match Fit’s defense before lobbing the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper to put the Young Stars ahead again.
It was Doumbouya’s second goal of the season after scoring in the season opener two weeks ago. With that goal, the Young Stars went into the break 2-1 ahead.
After the break, the Young Stars started where they left off and were able to increase their lead to 3-1. Doumbouya was the provider, sending in a through pass to Sterling who dribbled past two defenders before powering a shot in the near post to complete his brace.
Five minutes after the Young Stars went 3-1 ahead, they were reduced to ten men when Tahjay Swaby was given a second yellow yard and his marching orders after a cynical foul on the half-way line.
Playing with ten men for the remaining 35 minutes of the match, the Young Stars were still able to dig in deep with goalie Solomon Kamara making series of point-blank saves and the defenders putting their bodies on the line to keep the score at 3-1.
With the win, the Young Stars improve to 1-0-1 this season and moved up to fourth place on the seven-team APL U18/19 Division Standings.
The Young Stars return to action on Saturday, February 3rd away to Penn Fusion Academy. Kickoff is at 2:00pm at the United Sports Training Center in Downingtown, PA.
